Salary: £26,000 – £32,760 per year

JOB PURPOSE

To provide a portering service to the whole of the Trust and to provide a portering service to all sites as required.

To provide and maintain a professional, efficient, effective and timely service to patients, visitors and other departments that will contribute to achieving safe, high quality patient care.

To ensure the service supports the clinical care of patients and respects the privacy and dignity of every patient.

To contribute towards the development of best practice within the department and the training of new starters and inexperienced staff.

To support Facilities Managers and Coordinators in the development of the service.

PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

To move and transport patients, including their belongings, on beds, trolleys and chairs to and from all wards and department throughout the hospital site and transfer patients, using appropriate lifting and handling techniques.
To move deceased patients from wards and transport to the Mortuary and complete the appropriate documentation.
To lift, carry, handle and transport goods, stores, furniture, notes, medical gases, x-rays and any other items of medical equipment throughout the hospital.
To lift, carry, handle and transport general and clinical waste, including confidential waste, dirty linen to appropriate disposal areas and distribute clean linen to wards and departments.
To collect and deliver pharmacy boxes, which may include drugs and IV’s to all wards and departments.
To collect urgent specimens and transport to Pathology.
To deliver blood products throughout the hospital.
To receive, dispatch, sort and convey messages, documents, parcels and mail including recorded and special deliveries to all areas of the hospital.
To clean wheelchairs and trolleys between patient moves and thoroughly clean designated trolleys and wheelchairs as per cleaning schedules.
To connect and disconnect medical gas cylinders and complete appropriate documentation.
To compact general waste using the onsite waste compactors.
To drive, clean and carry out routine checks on tugs.
To keep waste compounds, including the compactor areas, clinical waste compounds and medical gases areas clean and tidy.
To support new staff in gaining experience of the hospital layout and operational duties.
To accompany ambulance patients and relatives and other visitors as required.
To contribute/make suggestions to the Coordinators to identify any areas where improvements can be considered.

PLEASE NOTE, THE HOURS OF WORK WILL BE MONDAY TO FRIDAY (may include occasional weekedns) AND THE SHIFT PATTERNS MAY INCLUDE: 06:00 TO 14:00, 14:00 TO 22:00, 10:00 TO 18:00.
