Designer (Adult’s)

Due to astonishing growth and success a Designer is urgently needed to join a fast growing, award winning publishing business in Sywell, Northants within the Adult Design Team, managing and creating high quality designs and artwork for a range of products, including Cookery, Reference, Lifestyle, Gift and Trivia.

The Designer`s main responsibilities include overseeing and mentoring junior team members as well as:-

– Translating a written or verbal brief, into an original design with visual impact, demonstrating an understanding of the intended market for that product.

– Working with the Editors and Head of Studio to fulfill design briefs

– Working on projects from initial stages to final upload, as decided by the Studio Manager. 

– Creating visuals and die-lines that clearly communicate the concept, or idea, for a product to other members of staff across all departments.

– Ensuring projects run and are delivered on schedule and to advise the Head of Studio and other relevant members of the team of any delays, or technical issues, which may affect the schedule.

– Briefing, liaising and managing external contributors and ensuring their work is delivered on time, within budget and to the expected quality (includes working with, and commissioning illustrators, agencies, photographers, packagers).

– Producing inventive, creative and impactful cover treatment layers and technical files, such as nesting sheets and cutter guides, for your projects. 

– Any other ad hoc duties requested by the Publisher, Head of Studio, or Art Director.

The ideal Designer will possess a thorough working knowledge of InDesign and Photoshop and have;

– Minimum of 2-3 years of book publishing experiences, or similar environment

– Strong commercial awareness of the markets we work within and a good understanding of production processes

– A strong understanding of book specifications and typography, image manipulation and creating print-ready files

– A broad range of technical skills enabling the creation of high-quality artwork

– Ability to prioritise workload to maximise efficiency with high attention to detail

– Natural creative flair, confidence to communicate ideas, good communication skills, enthusiastic

– Lateral thinking and creative problem solver is also desirable

– Must be resilient and able to work under pressure and to demanding timescales

– A creative and flexible approach to work and able to adapt quickly 

Hours of work are Mon-Fri, 37.5 hours.
