Principal Design Engineer Radcliffe Up to £70k

Progressive Engineering and an Engineering Leader in Heavy Fabricated Structures & Systems for Regulated Industries are looking to recruit a Principal Design Engineer for their Engineering & Manufacturing Site near Radcliffe, owing to succession planning and project workload for 2024-2025+.

Based near Radcliffe and reporting into the Engineering Director, the Principal Design Engineer will be responsiblefor:

  • Delivery of business plan and business objectives year-on-year.
  • Direct & Indirect Line Management of full Engineering Design Team
  • Drive departmental improvements and value engineering initiatives.
  • Reduction / Elimination of “drawing errors” as identified through the NCR process.
  • Forward Load Schedule Adherence
  • Ensure design activities and deliverables are undertaken/ completed in accordance with the master programme, and within project budget (track forecast vs actual hours).
  • Efficiency improvements to reduce design time in projects/ products.
  • Control of resource throughout the engineering department in-line with business demand. Monitor staff and contractor levels to ensure sufficient resource is available to deliver engineering output to customers, and into production.
  • Daily management of Design function; plan daily, weekly, monthly tasks for wider engineering team.
  • Resource management (incl. quarterly 1-2-1’s, staff & contractor recruitment/ retention, absence or sickness management, quality management, risk management, performance management etc.).
  • Governance over engineering estimates for tender submission.
  • Responsible for design compliance with project/ product technical specification/ statutory regulations.
  • Ownership/ Governance of all departmental processes

Qualification & Experience Required for Principal Design Engineer role:

  • Engineering Degree (Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering etc).
  • Technical Management experience in heavy steel fabrications / fabricated & welded structures (and associated manufacturing processes)
  • Experience managing engineering teams on projects of value >£5m.
  • Ideally Chartered Engineer (CEng) with a relevant professional body (e.g., IMechE, IET, ICE).
  • Strong knowledge of the construction/ infrastructure/ defence industry and applicable standards.
  • Suitable understanding of 2D and 3D CAD software packages, and BIM standards.
  • Strong and effective communication skills (written and oral).
  • Sound motivational skills with a focus on quality adherence and output.
  • Articulate and effective communicator, capable of managing and motivating direct & indirect reports
  • Planning, managing, and reporting project tasks and responsibilities.
  • Strong attention to detail and committed to quality performance/ output.
  • Ability to apply logic to programmes, and understand testing schedules.
  • Vision to identify issues and correlate remedials/ mitigations with the wider business strategy.

For the successful Principal Design Engineer, a salary of up to £70,000 + Package is on offer and this Principal Design Engineer role is commutable from Swinton, Bolton, Radcliffe, Walkden, Preston, Manchester, Wigan, Leigh, Bury, Blackburn, Chorley, Darwen, Ramsbottom, Atherton, Standish, Prestwich, Farnworth, Middleton, Heywood, Horwich & Westhoughton, Rawtenstall, Skelmersdale and Bamber Bridge.
