Principal/Senior Software Engineer – Java

We currently have a fantastic permanent opportunity for a highly talented and ambitious Principal Software Engineer to join an industry leading media client in London.

Responsibilities:

To help architect, prove and develop our application solutions on the client’s dynamic publishing platform or through the use of Cloud services, as appropriate.
To develop, test, release and document applications using best software engineering practices to ensure timely service delivery and ease of maintenance.
To provide time and resource estimates to assist in the planning of projects.
To collaborate effectively with other technical teams to exploit new technologies to enhance the applications and service infrastructure. Have the confidence and ability to interact and influence in peer groups.
To develop tools and methodologies to improve the effectiveness of the development process.
To keep abreast of developments in software engineering and technologies with proven leadership in the software community.
To review the work of other team members, providing excellent technical leadership within the team.
To assist with training of new team members and trainees as required. Mentor and be a role model for more junior members of the team. Proactive in creating a culture of high standards and excellence across the team.
To provide technical advice to the editorial and design teams on new application concepts and to establish their feasibility through prototypes.
To assist the Operations team with service launches by providing timely adoption documentation, training and assistance with problem resolution.
To provide any necessary 4th line out of hours application-related support during Tier 1 live events and shows, in rotation with the teamRequirements:

Substantial Java programming experience, including familiarity with JDBC and Spring.
Experience of relational databases (including MySQL), key-value stores (CouchDB), and SQL query design to an advanced level.
Internet protocols and technologies, including security.
Experience of software testing techniques including Test Driven Development
Experience of message-driven or event-driven systems
Experience working with Agile/Scrum/XP methodologies
A solid grounding in OOP
An understanding of Design Patterns
An appreciation of good user experience and prepared to be the users’ advocate
A track record of producing maintainable code within collaborative environments
Experience of working with source control systems
Ability to rapidly acquire new software skills and to work with new technologies
