Role: Trainee Assistive Technologist (Term Time Only)

Location: Beaumont College (Lancaster) LA2 6AP

Hours: 35 hrs per week over 42.75 weeks a year

Salary: £26,000per year (Full-time equivalence £17,800)

Directly reports: Lead Technologist

Budget/ Resource responsibility: General responsibility for allocation of resources relevant to post e.g. computer peripherals, connectors, leads etc.

Main Duties

Working within the technology team the post holder will provide support on special access technology, mainstream IT and other technology to students and staff within Beaumont College and its satellite sites. Supporting and developing special access technology in both the classroom and the wider environment will be a key feature of this role.

As this is a Trainee post, support will be given, by the Lead Assistive Technologist and other members of the Technology Team, to the post holder to develop their skills.

Primary Task

To support the technology and computer access requirements of individual students in a variety of settings, both within the classroom and in living or social contexts. To assist students in accessing and developing appropriate skills to use both standard and specialist IT equipment.

To support other staff in the use of special access technology. To encourage compliance with IT policies, procedures and best practice among all staff at the college.

Secondary Task

A secondary role will be to assist with providing a high quality, responsive support service to both staff and students. Special access support tasks will be passed up from the IT Helpdesk. There will be some occasions where first line support will be required as and when the IT Technicians are already busy with a support request or otherwise unavailable.

In addition to the above the post holder will be expected to assist in wider technological projects or development work as required by college management.

The post holder will be expected to support the learning of students through effective use of IT.

Key Responsibilities/ Tasks

To support the development and maintenance of assistive technology equipment across the College including specialist equipment.

To ensure that support is delivered in accordance with IT policies and departmental procedures and priorities.

To train and support students and staff in the use of specialist equipment and software.

To support staff in: developing computer based learning materials which support individual student’s learning needs and adapting technology for use by specific students.

To liaise with students’ keyworkers to ensure they are familiar with specialist equipment used to meet a student’s individual needs.

To undertake assistive technology assessments in conjunction with educational, therapy and communication staff.

Support the learning of our students by effective use of IT; this could include setting up special access equipment for use in various sessions.

In conjunction with other multidisciplinary team members conduct the risk assessment, provision and maintenance of the mounting of communication aid/technology equipment onto wheelchairs which will be overseen by a senior manager of the college.

Provide a rapid and friendly second or in some cases first line response to IT problems encountered by students and staff.

To participate with College project team in developing interactive and web based programmes.

To undertake other duties as required in support of IT and Assistive Technology at Beaumont College.

Due to nature of the role you must be double vaccinated in line with government legislation
