Project Engineer

Salary: £60,000 – £62,400 per year

Project Enginneer – Electrical Bias – Based Nottingham 

The company provide Electrical and Civil Engineering services to key infrastructure transport systems throughout the UK. This position represents a key stakeholder role within the project delivery cycle.

Projects/ Activities 

• Contribute to determining the strategic direction and work priorities for the continuous improvement of the engineering department.
• Customer engagement, development of relationships (existing and new customers).
•  Supporting Engineering and R&D in defining product attributes/design specifications by applying Electrical/Mechanical engineering knowledge, value engineering, continuous cost improvement initiatives including ‘make/buy’ decisions.
• Responsible for the development of mid and long-term product and service-based strategies.
• Key involvement in the successful delivery of project engineering activities from concept to production.
• Work with the function owners and integration engineers to create system specifications that meet all current and future requirements.
• Lead cross functional team reviews to ensure that components are delivered in line with the programme targets for function, quality, cost, timing, serviceability, and mass.
• Manage the design package through supplier reviews, working closely with the internal and external design teams to ensure robust virtual build process can be achieved.
• Understand technology trends and generate system proposals for inclusion on future programmes.
• Produce and control supporting design documentation to demonstrate robust development process. To include Design Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, Design Verification Plans, Engineering Release, Concern Resolution, and sign-off reports. Documents to include test plans detailing procedures and methodology as applicable.
• Prepare and present strategy and status reports to Senior Management.
• Support build and launch activities. Investigate, contain, and resolve issues as they arise. Escalate to Line Manager where necessary.
• Support purchasing department in defining future commodity strategy.
• Support Group Engineering, Purchasing and Production activities with technical assistance throughout the product lifetime.
• Undertake other tasks in support of Switchgear department or company objectives.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

• Direct experience gained of working with electronic control & switch products.
• Experience of working within the rail industry (desirable).
• Ability to lead and work within teams effectively.
• Exceptional planning skills to ensure delivery of projects, on budget and on time, with excellent verbal and writing skills.
• Manage external suppliers to deliver best in class systems.
• A good working knowledge of switch and control electronics systems.
• Must possess an engineering mind-set and logical approach to problem solving.
• Able to manage large workloads in a high-pressure environment and prioritise accordingly.
• Should have a good understanding of engineering process and a working knowledge of industry standard tool sets (FMEA, Design Verification Plan, Production Part Approval Process, etc.) where strong team building and networking skills are essential.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Must hold relevant qualifications, licences and certification that are necessary to fulfil duties & accountabilities: 

Engineering Degree or equivalent experience.

MS Office proficient (Word, Excel, Project), numerate and able to write regular reports in a professional format.

Preferably have knowledge of a process-related industry, its equipment and processes and likely risks e.g., construction, electrical engineering.

Management Systems:

Support Group management objectives, Quality Management System (QMS) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

Compliance with Network Rail and Railway Group Standards.

Compliance with the Scope of Works and Engineering Delivery Plan.

Assistance with Site Surveys and data collection.

Compliance with the Approved Design.

Involvement with the production of Test Plans.

Involvement in the preparation and production of O&M Manuals.

Assistance with test and commissioning activities.

Assistance with entry into service of critical equipment.

Compliance with the requirements of NICEIC.

Provide an interface between different design organisations/disciplines.

Provide support where necessary with tender bids.
