Linux DevOps Engineer

Linux Engineer Release Management, Build, Configuration and Deployment – Contract – 3 p/d

We have been a Preferred Supplier to this broadcasting company for over 3 years and have been asked to recruit a Release Management Engineer. Our client has a number of substantial application development projects on the go which are supported by the development of the Linux based operations (DevOps) environment. There is also the production support / Linux Administration Team you would work closely with. Our client has identified the need for a specific Release Engineer to build, configure and deploy. They are aiming for a Continual Improvement (CI) process to improve products, services, and processes.

This is a new role within the team and you will have a great deal of scope to make it your own creating and implementing new ideas and processes both internally and cross-department.

Skills and Experience Required

– Proficiency in Linux and proven ability to script in Bash, Python and / or Ruby
Performed and managed large-scale Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud deployments
– Good understanding of application deployment strategies & continuous integration (ideally using Jenkins/Git)
Good understanding of configuration management using Ansible, Chef, Puppet, or similar
– Good understanding of monitoring tools such as Nagios, Graphite/Grafana.
Proficiency in database management with MySQL and NoSQL (DynamoDB or MongoDB)
– Work closely with customers & partners to gather requirements and design integration solutions
– Translate business processes & requirements into technical integration requirements
– Evaluate new applications to assess integration approach
– Performance optimisation, tuning and re-engineering
– Strong track record of setting up brand new environments from inception through to completion
– Candidates with specific experience in cloud integration platforms that can take ownership of technical landscape for projects as and when required are preferred.
– Strong communication skills with the ability to recognise and influence key stakeholders
– Pro-actively builds relationships within the Infrastructure team as well as the Application development team to ensure a cohesive collaborative relationship exists between the two teams
– Champions the need for regular release cycles to enable continuous delivery (small increments rather than large change windows)
– Experience of Agile/Lean development methodologies in a DevOps environment such as Scrum and Kanban would be advantageous

The post holder should exhibit:

– A strong belief in and commitment to structured and formalised approaches to documentation
– Deep understanding of customer service with the ability to view systems in terms of service provision rather than discrete technical components, and should see technology as a business enabler
– Strong ownership and sense of responsibility
– An understanding that the role of a technical specialist will occasionally require the flexibility to work out-of-hours and take ownership of service affecting issues until a satisfactory resolution is reached
– A commitment to knowledge sharing and cross skilling and a general appreciation of the need to eliminate single points of failure and enhance systems to the point of “zero effort maintenance”
An ability to take an evidence-based approach to problems and developments, gather data and demonstrate how proposed solutions will provide optimal outcomes
– High levels of persuasion, persistence and determination, as well as the ability to influence and negotiate with people and present ideas and issues with authority and evidence
– Some understanding and appreciation of a formalised service management approach (ITIL for example), including an understanding of incident, problem and change management
– A very high standard of written and spoken English to help facilitate all the above
