Java Developer

We are looking for an experienced Java developer to join our close-knit team, developing Enterprise Content Management software. Our department consists of Java developers who work on a server based archive with a web interface, and.NET developers who work on a suite of thick- client applications for OCR and workflow.

The Candidate

Responsibilities

• General development across the frontend and backend
• Developing greenfield projects for bespoke requirements
• Maintaining continuous integration builds
• Helping with the release process (updating documentation/changelogs/etc)
• Proactively refactoring to reduce complexity and improve quality
• Second line support of application issues

The Company/ Role profile

A lot of our discussions about strategy and product direction take place in the open and we actively solicit and respect input. You’ll also take part in development discussions running from database normalization and software architecture, to UI design and accessibility.

We’re keen to improve ourselves, our projects and our practices. We try to use TDD where possible and all our applications are built and tested on our Continuous Integration server – TeamCity. The company invests in us and provides the opportunity to go to a software conference each year, so for the past few years we have attended Devoxx. As people we’re enthusiastic and open to exploring new technologies. Traditionally we have had Java and.NET roles but the distinction is blurring as we are cross training. We write most of our unit and integration tests with Scala and are using Groovy to experiment with BDD. We’ve also built some internal tools in Python and although our server-side application is heavily based on SQL, we’re interested in document based NoSQL databases such as MongoDB

We’re current building a REST interface to our archive to support integration with external systems and a new front end utilizing AngularJS. Following on from this the road map includes improving the build process to provision virtual machines on the fly for integration testing, and a DSL to drive the REST API in order to configure the system and insert test data. We are aiming for a Continuous Delivery process in order to rollout features sooner and get quicker feedback.
