What you need to know about the role
You will provide the senior and local management team with expert guidance in the development and implementation of HSE strategy and provide achievable solutions / methods for continual improvements in HSE performance within the Steelmaking area.
Steelmaking is a dynamic process and high-hazard facility that requires continual assessment to identify the critical actions required in a Plan, Do, Check, Act capacity.
Duties will include:
- Assess the impact of external influences on HSE processes in order to recommend and develop changes to the business management system and procedures.
- Developing and implementing business strategy for HSE improvements across Steelmaking.
- Assisting Plant Managers and Directors with compliance in both internal and external requirements.
- Support and implement proactive audit and monitoring systems to enable measurement of HSE performance against agreed targets and standards.
- Ensure that appropriate systems for the reporting and investigation of accidents and incidents are implemented and effectively utilised
- Communication of leading and lagging indicators across the steelmaking area and business as a whole.
- Develop relationships with HSE and operational professionals across British Steel to ensure a Sharing and Learning network is created and maintained.
- Work with the business HSE management team to ensure business compliance with HSE legislative requirements, industry best practice, and best available techniques.
- Liaise with all enforcement and advisory authorities / organisations and ensure all matters that affect Group policy are communicated effectively.
- Attend and lead relevant HSE meetings and provide professional advice and guidance to all parties concerned.
- Management of a local team of HSE professionals and operational personnel involved with permit and training systems.
- Developing and upskilling the local HSE and Operational team to create a sustainable progression plan within steelmaking.
The HSE Manager will regularly liaise with a variety of internal and external personnel at all levels of business:
- Employee representatives (TU Safety Reps)
- Business HSE Professionals
- External enforcement agencies
- Senior Management Team
- Local Management Team,
What we need to know about you
Experience in a similar senior role is essential, along with the ability to engage and motivate management teams and structure. It is essential that you have demonstrable leadership skills and have experience working within the heavy industry.
You should have a passion and drive to work towards improving and sustaining the steelmaking HSE performance.
A NEBOSH General Certification is a minimum requirement and ideally you should be working towards your diploma.
Experience with monitoring and auditing operational and engineering activities ideally aligned to ISO 45001 standards is also something we are looking for
.
You must have excellent communication skills and be able to lead and influence a diverse team of professionals across the business.
Being proficient in IT you will also possess analytical skills.
