Cost Controller

If you like working with numbers while building some of the country’s most exciting carbon neutral projects, then this could well be the role for you as we are working on a rare opportunity to join my client’s Major Projects team within a large multidisciplinary Civil Engineering firm.

You will be accountable for the development and maintenance of the project budgets as well as tracking project costs and maintaining the project within the approved budget

You will support the programme/project manager and the programme/project controls manager to develop the project scope, requirements, and work breakdown structure. This applies to consultancy projects as well as supporting our clients in the delivery of their projects.

You will be responsible for establishing appropriate techniques to monitor and control delivery to time, cost, and quality parameters. The role will be managing and reporting on consultancy costs as well as tracking and managing contractor costs.

You will be responsible for supporting the delivery of programmes or projects involving multidisciplinary teams. Collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders is essential, therefore strong communication and interpersonal skills are required.

Furthermore, the Cost Manager is responsible for high quality delivery and promoting health and safety excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • scheduling and monitoring
  • plan, monitor and control delivery of the programme or project schedule
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of Project Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and Cost Breakdown Structure (CBS) for specific scopes
  • Assist in the development of project
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of project cost
  • accurate cost code allocation and initial budget set-up and approvals
  • Attend project meetings as required
  • Support in the project cost close-out process

Skills / Experience

Essential:

  • 2+ year’s experience in a project controls environment
  • Experience of large and complex projects and/or programmes
  • Experience in tracking / controlling performance to achieve delivery of projects to time and within budget
  • An understanding of financial management of professional / consultancy services as well as that of major projects
  • Use of Contract principles and procedures in managing cost
  • Advanced Excel skills (i.e., Formulas, pivot tables, graphs, look ups)
  • Strong attention to detail and data analysis/ manipulation skills
  • Confident communicator, experience of interacting with a range of stakeholders

Desirable:

  • Experience in the use of programme/project controls software for scheduling
  • Experience of preparing and maintaining an overall schedule for resource use
  • Identifying and monitoring project and/or programme and/or portfolio Qualifications

Essential:

  • Degree level or equivalent in an engineering, building, quantity surveying, science or equivalent
  • Programme / Project controls qualifications – cost, scheduling, risk management

Desirable:

  • Membership of appropriate professional institution
  • Project Management qualification i.e. PRINCE2, APM PFQ
  • Membership of Association for Project Management or Project Management Institute
