Fabrication & Assembly Manager

Salary: £54,000 – £60,000 per year

Our client is one of the world leaders in the electrical installation equipment manufacturing and supply sectors, offering a broad range of LV installation products through HV switchgear and industrial installation applications. The company employs around 400 people in manufacturing operations throughout the UK, and brings together some of the electrical industry’s most impressive and established brands.

Due to an ongoing commitment to their continued and ambitious growth plans, our client is now seeking to appoint an experienced Fabrication & Assembly Manager. Reporting to the Head of Operations, you will take the direct and total responsibility for managing all aspects of mechanical and electrical fabrication and assembly activity at the company’s Manchester head office / site, and ultimately ensure that only 100% compliant products reach their customers.

The Role

* Ensure the fabrication and assembly of products are completed in accordance with the agreed customer required dates, and manufactured within the allocated budgeted times and agreed quality standards, including optimisation of departmental stock holding, and performance and quality monitoring

* Day to day management of the team (mechanical fitters and electrical engineers) via a Team Leader and other support staff, enabling them to effectively carry out their day-to-day fabrication tasks

* Ensure adequately skilled and trained resources are in place to meet the needs of the business at any given time

* Optimisation of fabrication and assembly tasks to ensure they can be completed effectively in the minimal time possible

* Develop a multi-disciplined team to provide maximum departmental flexibility, always ensuring an environment that is conducive to productive work output

* Ensure all key activities and processes are fully documented with written procedures

* Developing, maintaining and communicating KPI’s with regards to OTIF, quality, cost and safety

* Ensuring the maintenance of accurate records of raw material stock levels and their locations

* Ensure that all operations are carried out in a manner that is safe for team members, colleagues, and visitors alike

* Ensure the segregation of non-conforming products to avoid cross contamination with useable products

* Maximise departmental, and indirectly, company effectiveness through engagement with continuous improvement, employee engagement and positive culture initiatives

* Responsibility for the safekeeping, maintenance and upkeep of any assets, tools and equipment allocated to the department

* Adhere to company policies and procedures relating to HSEQ management and HR

The Person

* Degree in Electrical Engineering is preferred but as a minimum an HND (or equivalent) will be considered, similarly applicants without the aforementioned qualifications, but with the required experience and competency will also be considered

* Excellent ability to engage, motivate and lead a team

* Excellent communication skills and the ability to integrate into a specialised team, working closely with customers, operations leadership and peers within the business as a whole

* Ability to read, understand and interpret mechanical and electrical engineering drawings, parts lists and associated documentation

* Demonstrable the ability to meet demanding and flexible deadlines

* High level of PC literacy, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint etc

* Production and resource planning expertise

* Able to maintain a high level of housekeeping standards within the working environment

* Able to act as a coach and mentor to instruct others with regards to the fabrication department’s processes and procedures

* Able to respond positively to rapidly changing priorities

* Demonstrable skills of leading, managing and working within a demanding punch, press and paint shop environment

* An understanding and exposure to the implementation of LEAN principles and tools

* Highly skilled in problem solving
