Engineering Manager – Design Consultancy (Oil / Gas)

Salary: £26,000 per year

My Client, who is a successful, estbalished design consultancy in sectors of Oil / Gas, Nuclear, Subsea and general engineering, are looking for an Engineering Manager for the company based in Newton Aycliffe.

Position – Engineering Manager

Reporting to – Company Directors

Purpose / Role – In this role you will manage a multidisciplinary team of designers and engineers and lead the delivery of design activities incorporating Mechanical, Structural, Hydraulic and EC&I engineering. You will be accountable for all aspects of design and engineering and will be expected to provide technical leadership and governance to team of up to 20 individuals. You will liaise with a variety personnel including company directors, technical staff, non-technical staff, suppliers, clients and other 3rd parties. You will be expected to contribute to discussions on a variety of matters including technical, non-technical, project, QHSE and commercial.

Key Aims and Objectives

• To provide the company with a strong base of technical skills coupled with excellent communication and organisational skills

• To provide management and leadership of a multidisciplinary team

• Leadership of design teams to develop designs in compliance with design standards and customer requirements

• Staff management of design team including objective setting, performance management and supporting career development

• Technical coordination with wider team to integrate design activities into overall project delivery

• Monitoring progress of design development and achievement of design deliverables to agreed schedule / budget

• Act as an interface between project delivery teams and company directors

Responsibilities and Duties

• As a minimum to fulfil the duties of a Senior Engineer

• Provide technical governance over project deliverables

• Provide technical guidance and supervision over a multidisciplinary team of designers and engineers

• Management of technical staff training and skills matrix

• Responsible of maintaining appropriate levels of technical resource

• Responsible for recruitment, interviews and inductions

• Management and approval of timesheets and holiday requests

• Ensuring compliance with technical assurance standards and reviews of project deliverables produced by the team

• Ensure accurate records are produced and maintained

• Ensure design processes are upheld

• Manage design related procedures and templates

• Dealing with staffing issues such as conducting appraisals and performance reviews

• Dealing with staff problems e.g. punctuality, sickness, general behaviour and personal needs

Core Competences & Qualities

• The ability to perform all duties expected of a Senior Engineer

• Minimum 2nd class degree qualification in a relevant subject

• Minimum charted engineer with relevant engineering institute

• Sound understanding of engineering principles

• A minimum of 10 years post graduate experience in an engineering role preferably within highly regulated industries such as Nuclear, Subsea, Renewables, Oil & Gas

• An enthusiasm for engineering

• A practical experience/background is essential

• Knowledge of manufacturing process including welding, fabrication and machining

• Understanding of geometric tolerances, limits and fits, weld symbols and surface finish

• Proven experience in coaching and motivating people to achieve excellent results

• Proven track record as an engineering leader

• A strong ability to communicate and influence people, with evidence of delivering great business outcomes

• Experience of change management and project management

• Knowledge of legislation and standards relating to safety within engineering e.g. CDM, Machinery Directive, LOLER, etc.

• Commercial awareness of NEC3 & NEC4 contracts would be beneficial

• Experience using CEMAR would be beneficial
