Commercial Insurance Broker
Reporting to Stuart Shepley, Co-founder and Director, initially based on the Surrey / Kent border with an option to work in East Sussex with remote working too as appropriate.
Other principal relationships are Linda Read Shepley, Managing Director in relation to sales, marketing and broking objectives. Other members of the team who require quality assessment and support in relation to broking-related activities.
Overall objectives:
* To manage the broking of both new and existing business across all lines, to support your contribution to the achievement of overall objectives as outlined in your individual Performance Contract
* Provision of a quality service to existing clients, covering all aspects of their insurance arrangements; to advise, review, arrange and secure the appropriate cover at a competitive premium
* Support the development of prospects and the generation of new business
* Input to the design insurance programmes for the protection of the material assets and liabilities of clients and oversee their effective operation
* To support the broking of business across our growing Group and become a recognised expert for other members of the team
* Use the Acturis system to manage the broking activity of the business.
* Deliver agreed short-term project deliverables from time to time
* Complete all training and personal development objectives in your personal development plan (PDP) to agreed timescales
Goals & Requirements:
To support the achievement of Key Performance Indicators (i.e., new business, renewal retention, cross selling and overall profitability) in a manner which complies with agreed policies and procedures in line with FCA regulations
Broking Duties
1. To provide broking services, with a high quality personalised service that extends across all aspects of our clients’ insurance arrangements; where you advise, review, arrange and secure the appropriate cover at a competitive premium
2. Deal with new business, mid-term adjustments and renewals, placing business in the most relevant markets according to company terms and conditions, referring to senior colleagues, experts (internal and external) or insurers when issues fall outside your own experience or knowledge
3. Carry out instructions regarding the arrangement or amendment of insurance for clients, referring the query to the appropriate person when the enquiry falls outside own knowledge and experience
4. Deal with telephone enquiries promptly, referring the query to the appropriate person when the enquiry falls outside your own knowledge and experience
5. Be aware of market developments in your business areas and bring them to the attention of clients and colleagues where appropriate
6. Input new business, amendments and renewals on the Acturis policy administration system to maintain accurate records, keeping copy records in customer files on shared directories where appropriate and in accordance with company procedures
7. Handle any complaints in accordance with the company’s Complaints Policy
8. Establish and maintain strong relationships with clients, insurers and other suppliers
9. Seek to cross-sell other available products which meet the clients’ needs and improve the client’s coverage
10. Support new business development including intelligence gathering for the purpose of obtaining new clients. To research such clients and approach them. To follow up the approach and investigate their existing cover
11. Prepare and present a report to clients which will satisfy their insurance needs
12. To advise other members of staff of such information obtained for a client which may be of potential use to them
13. Exercise judgement when reviewing proposals, either new or renewals, referring queries to a senior colleague or insurer when appropriate
14. Deal with any telephone enquiries for new or existing business, exercising own judgement, based upon knowledge and experience, as to when to refer to senior colleagues
15. Liaise with Account Handler(s) in marketing and Claims Handler(s) when needed and assist in training other members of staff where required
16. Attach correct policy wordings to certificates including any other wording (exclusions, conditions, warranties etc.) to documents sent to clients

Ensure all relevant business activities fully comply with FCA regulation and company’s policies and procedures. Use checklists with supporting documentation as provided by the company to evidence compliance.
Conduct learning, training and assessment exercises in accordance with the individual Training & Competence (T&C) programme applicable to you. Identify further areas for own development as required and input into your Personal Development Plan (PDP).
Do not have outside interests which could reasonably be regarded as likely to give rise to a conflict of interest. Declare interests to the Company in any proposed transactions. Act in accordance with the FCA’s Statements of Principle for Approved Persons. Support the promotion of a Treating Customers Fairly (TCF) culture in all respective business areas.
Support the development of a compliant and risk management environment. Handle any complaints in accordance with company procedures and regulatory requirements. Be aware and understand the company’s compliance policies and procedures and ensure full compliance with those relevant to the role.
Information Security:
Ensure full adherence to the company’s Data Security Policy. Assuming personal responsibility for personal data (client and employee) you control/manage, to ensure it is securely held and properly utilised in accordance with the principles of the GDPR. Report any potential breaches immediately, including weaknesses in current systems, to a Director.

Ensure all communications with Insurers or customers are accurately recorded as per company procedures. Adopt the team peer review process of ‘do/check/review’ for all formal communications

Knowledge and understanding:
Keep abreast of relevant industry developments, initiatives and market trading conditions. Maintain familiarity of all company specific policies and procedures. Keep a working knowledge of FCA rules and guidelines relating to commercial clients and / or private consumers. Continuously develop knowledge of insurance and related issues through formal and informal learning, both internal to the firm and externally.
Skills and IT Experience:
Accurate data input skills. Familiarity of company operating / policy administration system (ideally Acturis). Working knowledge of Microsoft products (Word, Outlook, OneDrive and Excel)
