Senior Design Engineer

Based in Bedfordshire

Salary: Commensurate with Experience

The client:

Listgrove is supporting a global leader in providing the life sciences industry with packaging solutions. They are now looking to recruit a Senior Design Engineer to bring strength and depth to the creative team.

The Role:

* The Senior Design Engineer will be required to lead and participate in design projects, bringing creativity and innovation to the development of the company’s current and future packaging solutions.

* Provide strong technical direction and design leadership to a cross functional team.

* Manage projects where required adhering to defined company processes and procedures and undertake specific projects either as a project manager or a team member as required by the Engineering Manager.

Key responsibilities:

Lead and participate in design projects, bringing creativity and innovation to the development of the company’s current and future packaging solutions.

Provide strong technical direction and design leadership to a cross functional team and manage projects where required adhering to defined company processes and procedures

Set up and conduct mechanical / thermal simulations to design and validate cold chain shipping containers

Take a pro-active approach to attendance of appropriate conferences and learning opportunities in order to remain in touch with industry trends.

Strong focus and proficient use of 3D CAD, FEA and Thermal Simulation Software to both validate design concepts and deliver product support documentation

Prepare and deliver technically focused presentations to both internal and external groups.

Management of external and internal dependencies in order to maintain standards of design output. These will include but not be limited to:

Tooling design approval

Acceptance criteria for new products and / or materials

Drawing control

Validation of product throughout design and delivery (i.e. dFMEA)

Provide advice to suppliers and manufacturing partners where required in respect of:

Material specifications

Acceptable design tolerances

Manufacturing processes

Provide project direction in relation to cost reduction and margin improvement.

Develop and manage cost models for NPD projects in conjunction with Finance teams.

Liaise with internal legal counsel and patent attorneys to develop patent applications.

Use graphic design and applicable software packages to create visual product concepts, animations, and other technical imagery to support product development, promotion and usage.

Generation of physical prototypes to prove concepts including managing external design resources and prototype suppliers

Attend customer sites, industry conferences and exhibitions to support the sales and marketing process with technical input and to maintain strong awareness of industry developments.

Essential Requirements:

Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar field

Master’s in engineering / Materials / Physics

Proficient in 3D CAD (Solidworks)

Experience in thermal and / or mechanical simulation software (such as Ansys)

Must be able to travel to visit customers, suppliers, subcontractors or other Company sites as and when necessary.

The ability to interact effectively and diplomatically with all company personnel and customers under minimum supervision and be responsive to the requirements of department members and other departments with whom interaction is necessary.

Additional Preferred Skills:

Materials and thermal background

Experience of patent development and freedom to operate would be an advantage

Experience in IoT development or integration would be an advantage, such as, wireless communications

For EU roles, candidates must be eligible to work and live in the European Union.

Proof of eligibility will be required with your application.
