Job Summary

AECOM is seeking a highly-motivated, technically knowledgeable Safety professional to join the Strategic Highways team as Health & Safety Lead across the UK & Ireland team. The successful candidate will be responsible for devising, and agreeing with the executive management team, an improvement programme to deliver measurable benefits in Health & Safety (H&S) management in the Strategic Highways sector. It is anticipated that this will include managing Design for Safety initiatives in the region, including awareness, communication and training, rewards and recognition, employee and management engagement, and H&S metrics – with the overall objective of managing Safety risk.

Job Responsibilities:

Health & Safety

– Working with the Strategic Highways Executive team throughout the UK & Ireland (the region) in managing Health & Safety, including Safety in Design (SiD), Design for Operations and Design for Maintenance.

– Devising an improvement plan to create a ‘best in class’ service in relation to H&S

– Providing training (including delivering internal AECOM training);

– Providing guidance on the evaluation and use of sub-contractors in their H&S management, and conducting audits and corrective action follow-up;

– Recommending changes to policies and procedures that affect the Region’s operations and employees in Strategic Highways;

– Working on issues with diverse scope, and be able to quickly analyse situations, collaborative interpersonal relationships and data in order to arrive at sound safety solutions;

Business Development

– To support business development activities in the region with appropriate inputs in order to ensure business targets are met.

– To support the maintenance of effective client relationships with key clients through the development of appropriate health, safety and wellbeing strategies., being alert to commercial opportunities.

– To work closely with the executive leadership team in order to ensure relevant Sector KPIs are met.

– Responding to client-specific requests in relation to Health & Safety.

Resource Management

– Coordinating and collaborating with local H&S Representatives to effectively implement appropriate H&S improvement plans and Design for Safety objectives at all offices;

– Working effectively with other internal H&S professionals, Human Resources and legal counsel teams within AECOM;

– Working effectively with project delivery teams in order to develop and implement project specific solutions relative to safety in design, design for operation and design for maintenance.

Risk Management

– To develop and maintain a philosophy and attitude of sound risk management through comprehensive reviews of safety related risk on pursuits, conformity with the Legal Reference Guide and the continuing development of good practice; and to assist in the wider corporate and management functions of the Civil and Infrastructure business to ensure continuing growth and development of the highways business overall. This includes a requirement to work flexibly across the UK and other AECOM geographies if required to liaise with the wider business.
Minimum Requirements

– Extensive work history of directly-related experience in Health & Safety in the Highways Sector;

– In-depth knowledge of the policies, procedures and requirements of key highways clients, in particular Highways England;

– Knowledge of SH&E legislation and regulations and demonstrable experience of safety process implementation;

– Effective written and verbal communications skills;

– Technical knowledge of general industry and construction safety;

– Understands current business trends.

– NEBOSH Certified Safety Professional

– Demonstrable experience in the design and implementation of major highway improvement schemes.

Preferred Qualifications

Relevant Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent;
