We’re looking for an exceptional Security Compliance Windows Engineer to help us make a difference to our planet.

As our Security Compliance Windows Engineer you will work a hybrid pattern and will be on site at Exeter HQ minimum 2 days per week (flexible). You can choose to work more frequently in our state-of-the-art office if you’d prefer. As our Security Compliance Windows Engineer, your starting salary will be £25870.00. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band minimum. Our 2022-2025 pay award means the salary will increase to £26945.00 from 1st April 2024, and you will be able to progress towards £29531.00 over time.

In addition you will be paid £2500.00 per annum as a market supplement to reflect the demand for your skills. You will be paid this market driven allowance from April 2022 until March 2024 in your monthly pay whilst performing this role. From April 2024 until September 2025 the confirmed RRA for this post is £2200.00 per annum.

Your total reward package is potentially worth up to £36318.00 annually, which includes basic salary, potential corporate bonus and employer pension contributions.

Job Purpose

As our Security Compliance Windows Engineer, your key responsibilities are:

To support the secure delivery of the Met Office Windows-based IT systems and IT services, providing support to users, carrying out changes and resolving technical issues.

  • Patching our Windows server and endpoint devices
  • Remediate issues relating to patching
  • Proactively reviewing the Incident and Task queues and taking ownership of issues as appropriate
  • Responding to customers and colleagues promptly and keeping them informed
  • Prioritising support requests effectively and to the appropriate level of urgency/impact
  • Reprioritising effectively in response to changes in volume/new priorities
  • Triaging and escalating support beyond your present capability/remit

We operate an on-call roster in Technology to provide 24/7/365 support to respond to operational service requirements. This post may be part of an on-call roster and the postholder would be required to participate in an on-call roster where in operation.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

  • Enterprise technology experience in the following technical domains:

 

  • Microsoft Operating Systems support (Windows 10/11, Windows Server 2016/2019/2022)
  • Active Directory tools (ADUC, Group Policy, AD Object Management)

 

  • Enterprise technology knowledge or understanding of one of the following:

 

  • ITSM Tool exposure/usage for Incident Management and change management
  • Intune and other MS365 platforms
  • Patch management – MCM/SCCM, PatchMyPC preferred
  • Anti-virus – Defender preferred

 

  • Logical, methodical, and with excellent attention to detail. Fast learner with a passion to learn, with an aptitude for quickly understanding and solving technical problems unaided. Knows when to seek help when problem requires assistance and/or no direct progress is being made (i.e. triage/escalation).
  • Can work broadly independently and collaboratively both in troubleshooting/support and also in undertaking project work. Ensures deadlines are met without sacrificing quality.

Additional information

The successful candidate will join the Security Compliance team which is responsible for configuration, patch management, and proactive monitoring of services to maintain the security and compliance of Windows-based systems. Use of own knowledge and independent knowledge gathering is expected, utilising resources such as the Internet and colleagues with greater experience/exposure. The successful candidate will contribute to the monthly manual patching of several critical servers as well as monitoring cyber security intelligence sources and escalating if required. The role holder will also contribute to the identification and deployment of configuration changes to the environment intended to increase the organisation’s security posture.

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a committed approach to learning the processes and systems used by the team, and to continually improve their capability in these areas.
