Salary: £37,336 to £40,221 per annum.
Location: Your office base will be in Chichester, and a typical week will involve a combination of working from home and attending the office on at least 2 days or going on site visits, depending on the needs of the service. Your designated team day in the office is on Fridays.
Contract: Permanent.
Working pattern: Full-time, 37 hours per week. Flexible working options available, to be agreed with your line manager.
Employer Pension Contribution: 20.70% this alters per annum on 1st April.
Annual leave: 27 days holiday + Bank holidays = 35 days.
As a Road Safety Engineer, you will develop interventions to reduce road casualties and promote active travel across the County.
This role aims to support the identification and feasibility of road safety schemes and provide professional and technical advice to stakeholders.
You will:
- Undertake analysis of collision and casualty data and assess the risk to road users using established methodologies and techniques.
- Recommend and deliver road safety engineering, speed management and behavioural change interventions.
- Create and maintain Project Initiation Documents.
- Monitor individual scheme delivery including financials.
- Assist in the monitoring of completed schemes.
- Contribute to wider service objectives by developing policies and procedures, which involve researching information, developing ideas, making recommendations, and obtaining approvals.
- Make a positive contribution to the development of sustainable communities in West Sussex.
- Act as a mentor to support the maintenance and development of professional practice across the service.
What we need from you:
- Extensive knowledge of highways, transportation standards, civil engineering design, construction procedures, techniques, and statutory procedures.
- Experience in highways, transport, or planning with strong technical knowledge of road safety engineering and education disciplines, including behaviour change techniques, to provide advice and support to others.
- Experience in effectively communicating complex or sensitive information to the public with the ability to represent the County Council in public engagements, including Court appearances.
- Strong analytical and judgment skills to analyse and interpret complex technical data, situations, and surveys. Can independently resolve issues during site assessments, planning solutions, and making impactful decisions. Adaptable and able to think laterally in changing situations.
- Strong literacy and numeracy skills to effectively prepare reports/briefs, conduct research, collaborate with service professionals, and share best practices.
- Excellent IT skills including specialist technical IT systems such as CAD or GIS. Strong working knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong customer service skills and a commitment to continuous improvement and innovation for self and team. Able to contribute to planning, make effective judgments, and review service activities.
- Understanding of the Safe System approach.
