This Traineeship Programme has been designed by Employers to prepare young people for a future career in Rail Engineering and helping them progress into employment and an Apprenticeship.
The Traineeship will last 2-3 months in which an initial block of intensive training enables candidates to gain the minimum mandatory requirements to start work as a track maintenance operative in the UK rail industry.
Candidates completing this Traineeship programme will attend a specialist Rail Engineering Training School (Full-Time) where they will follow a focused initial period of Work Preparation Training together with English and Maths.
All learners will be sponsored through the programme by a Network Rail Link-Up approved employer who will have the opportunity to shape the content of their candidates training. However all learners will gain the following basic outcomes.

Due to the safety critical nature of the Rail Industry it is essential candidates are able to demonstrate their basic level of competence before entering the workplace.
Work Placement in month 2-3 once candidates have successfully completed their Mandatory Safety Critical Training they will have a Work Placement usually with their Primary Sponsor on the UK Rail Infrastructure as a Blue Hat new entrant. This Work Experience will be a minimum of 100 hrs.
On completion of their Traineeship all candidates will be supported to progress onto an Apprenticeship within our employer network.
Apprenticeship
Purpose of Job:
To support your allocated Team leader and Installer to undertake all works within their capabilities, training and/or experience.
To operate and safely use plant and equipment within their competencies and that they hold the required license or cards for.
Principle Accountabilities:
Carry out the work to the required standards of workmanship, including standards expected by the Client, to industry best practice, to the Clients documented Standards and Specifications, and as directed by the Team Leader.
Undertake all work in-accordance with the documented safe systems of work, and as directed by the Team Leader.
Undertake all work in timely manner as per directed by the Team Leader.
Provide input and feedback to the Team Leader on quality, safety and environmental issues and areas for improvement, including the reporting of unsafe acts or omissions, near misses and accidents etc.
Detailed Responsibilities:
Liaise with the Team Leader to provide input and gain information during all stages of the works.
Work in-accordance with, and due diligence of all prescribed and issued Standards, drawings and other documentation.
Help the Team Leader to produce records at each stage of the works in-accordance with all prescribed and issued Standards and other documentation.
Use all plant and equipment in a safe manner and in-accordance with the manufacturers instructions, using guards and other protective devices fitted.
Use and care for all issued plant and equipment and report defects immediately, ensuring the plant and equipment cannot be used by other un-intentionally.
Use and care for all personal protective equipment and clothing free issued by the Company, and request replacements on loss or wear through the Team Leader.
Comply with the Companys Policies and procedures, specifically accident, incident, and near miss reporting, drugs and alcohol abuse, refusal to work on the grounds of H&S, and working in-accordance to the restrictions placed on working hours and shift patterns etc
Work the contracted number of hours each week.
Attend all training and assessments required by the Company in-connection with your duties.
Required Experience, Knowledge, Qualifications and Training:
Practical experience within Rail industry is desired but not essential, an attitude and willingness to learn and progress is essential.
Have a Good appreciation of Network Rail Standards is desired but not essential.

Skills Required
Practical and good with your hands you will have a real interest in an Apprenticeship within the Rail industry. You must be keen to learn and to fit in to the working environment.
