Job Description:

A vacancy for a senior project manager has become available within a large scale and highly complex scientific software programme at the Met Office: Next Generation Modelling Systems Programme (NG-ARCH Project).

The Met Office aims to consistently improve the computer programmes that simulate the weather and climate and that underpin our forecasts and climate projections. These computer programmes have more than a million lines of code and they run on some of the world’s most powerful supercomputers. To achieve this, the Next Generation Modelling Systems (NGMS) Programme is redesigning its current computer programmes to prepare them for the next generation of supercomputer architectures. NGMS is a key element of the Met Office’s corporate strategy and hence it is a high-profile programme.

The project “Preparing Momentum for next generation architectures” (NG-ARCH) is essential in the development of this capability in preparation for next generation supercomputer architectures (Momentum is the name of what NGMS’s redesign will deliver). The project will be achieved through a combination of contracts with external delivery partners, contingent labour, and internal Met Office resource. The project comprises three work packages led by subject matter experts (SMEs) covering the development of capability that:
i. underpins our weather and climate forecasts,
ii. supports the fast and efficient transfer of data into and out of our systems,
iii. provides initial conditions by incorporating observations into our weather forecasts.

Working with three SMEs, the Project Manager will lead the NG-ARCH project and the project team on a day-to-day basis. The Project Manager is responsible for driving and overseeing the delivery of the project to ensure that the objectives are clearly defined and achieved within the agreed time, cost, and quality constraints. The Project Manager has a key role in project governance and working with stakeholders, to ensure the agreed project outputs are delivered to enable benefits to be realised.
The successful project manager, supported by a project support officer, will deliver the NG-ARCH project working alongside a pool of experienced project and science leads as well as a broad range of other specialists (e.g. Scientific Software Engineers, Architects, Analysts, etc.) as part of a large multi-disciplined team comprising both Met Office and external supplier partners.

We’re looking for a project manager with the experience to deliver projects on time and to budget without compromising on quality. Significant experience of contract management is a must, along with excellent communication and leadership skills.
