Head of IT (Software Development Focus, Big Data, some infrastructure): Public Sector: Watford area. This well-established organisation is currently undergoing a major restructuring programme and, as part of this ongoing initiative, they have created a new, permanent position for a Head of IT to lead and direct the IT development activities within the company for both internal and client facing systems.

Head of IT – Overview:

The position will see you managing 3 key areas – Web development, Core systems development, and Infrastructure – via department heads, who mainly are very long-standing employees of the organisation. Each department is fairly small (2-5 staff) so although this position requires a lot of experience in the industry it needs someone who is a fairly hands-on type of manager who can operate at a strategic level but also deal with day-to-day people management.

Head of IT – the Role:

This exciting opportunity covers: –

Directing the IT development activities of the organisation to support all functions with a primary focus on cost reduction / elimination and revenue generation.
Leading the IT team as well as having overall responsibility for business growth driven by web presented systems.
Developing products and services and promote customer awareness of those products and services.
Supervising and coordinating the development and support of new and existing software.
Strategic, yet practically-minded, thinking to both plan and lead the strategic management of the IT and IM functions.
Delivery of all web and software developments, and the management of systems and infrastructure, both external and internal facing.
Budgetary control duties Head of IT – the Person:

This position would suit an experienced IT systems manager possessing a good software / web development background, with a reasonable understanding of IT infrastructure, Big Data knowledge, who has a good track record working in a Public Sector / Scientific / similar environment; someone used to working and presenting to trustees and committees in order to push forward with new initiatives. You will need:

Proven experience of systems development life-cycle
To demonstrate experience of designing and building internal and client-facing web sites and systems from scratch
To possess a ‘consultative’ approach to managing change and driving projects – this is not a typical ‘corporate’ fast-paced environment
A good knowledge of ‘Big data’. The company processes a huge volume of data in their industry that they are seeking to exploit and there will be on-going projects in this area.
Experience of finding and utilising outsourced resource (not necessarily overseas), particularly with a focus on web development
A strong commercial awareness in order to interact with the more ‘corporate’ side of this organisationThis is a fantastic opportunity for a driven and motivated individual, who genuinely wants to settle down with a company for the long-term.
