Job Description
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service is looking for an Application Developer (Microsoft 365 (Power Apps) Java / React) to enhance our team based in Exeter. You will join us on a full-time, permanent basis (37 hours per week). In return, you will receive a competitive salary of £35,745 to £38,223 per annum. The role is based at Service Headquarters, Exeter, but there is the availability of flexible and / or home working, which can be discussed and agreed with the successful applicant.

About the Application Developer role:
You will be working as part of the Development Team on agile projects that make a real difference, delivering applications and features used by front-line and support staff.
We have developed an extensive suite of software applications in Java which require enhancement, maintenance and support. Further to this the Service has invested in Microsoft 365 and are now looking to utilise its functionality to improve business effectiveness and efficiency and exploit the opportunities this platform provides.
Key responsibilities as an Application Developer:
- To take a creative and innovative approach to software design as part of an agile team within the bounds of agreed processes and standards
- Developing software that is aligned to all relevant standards including ICT Target Architecture, ICT and Corporate Strategies; highlighting any potential deviations and communicating the progress
- Promote ‘Customer Centric’ design principles into the ICT Service Development process, developing software centred around End User need and experience
- To analyse requirements for software to ensure that requirements for software are delivering suitable value, providing feedback to include time estimates and highlighting anything impeding progress
- To perform manual testing to ensure your work is high quality and meets the Definition of Done, looking to introduce automation as part of the development process
- To work within an in-house style guide for all User eXperience (UX) development that aligns, where appropriate, with existing Government and internal brand standards
- Maintain technical expertise to enable analysis, development, testing and release of software deployed within DSFRS
- To be actively involved in triage, fixing and release of bugs/issues of software as part of a DevOps (combined development and operations) function

What we are looking for in our Application Developer:
- Understanding of a range of development technologies, opportunities and processes across a broad range of subject areas, for example:
- Microsoft 365 (PowerApps, Power Automate and PowerBI)
- Java
- React
- SQL
- Experience of working effectively at a practitioner level within a software development function.
- Agile development and methodology
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to explain key concepts to individuals with varying levels of experience and understanding
- The ability to liaise and engage effectively with staff across the organisation
