My client is an Ofsted outstanding primary school in the East London Borough of Waltham Forest and they are looking to secure the services of a well-rounded and assertive graduate to join them as a teaching assistant from September 2015. You will be working on a 1:1 basis with a year 4 pupil with ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder).

The school you will be joining…

The school is very proud of the progress it has made the in past five years. They have progressed from Ofsted satisfactory to outstanding and have managed to dramatically increase key stage two attainment to well above the national average. As a result of the progress they have made, pupils have a strong sense of pride about the school they attend and welcome visitors warmly to it. They are proud to discuss their work and current progress. Ofsted , when assessing the school last year, commented on how confidently pupils could talk about what was what they needed to do in order to achieve their academic targets. As well as having excellent understanding of their own learning and progress, pupils are also behaved to an outstanding level. Expectations of behaviour for learning are clear and teachers rarely have to manage low level disruption.

The role you will be undertaking…

You will be working as a 1:1 teaching assistant with a year 4 pupil with ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder). They’re high functioning and will require your support and focus for literacy and numeracy- requiring any prospective graduate candidates to be strong in these areas. Furthermore, experience of PECS or Makaton would help you in your daily responsibilities. Their behaviour is generally very good, but focus and attention can be challenging for them. This is why it is essential that the successful candidate has an engaging and confident manner.

The qualifications and experience you will require…

Because the school you will be joining is a training school, they will only be looking to see candidates with degrees and an ambition for wanting to pursue a primary education career. Alternatively, you may be considering a career as an educational psychologist. Ideally you will have existing experience of working with pupils with Autism (or similar requirements) or special educational needs in general. This will be important as the school are searching for a candidate who can slot seamlessly into the daily running of things.
