SALARY: £38,400 – £50,400, bonus, healthcare, pension

LOCATION: Northumberland, Newcastle, North East

We are recruiting for a port manager to lead and develop a team of operatives, heavy plant operators, supervisors and stevedores in a busy and growing maritime site

PREVIOUS JOB TITLES you may have held: Distribution, Operations, Warehouse General Manager, Construction Site Manager, Depot Manager

Sectors You may have worked in: Shipping, Marine, Naval, Navy, Maritime, Offshore or Onshore Operations, Warehousing, Distribution, Logistics, Transport, Construction, Heavy Lifting, Crane & Lift Operations, Heavy Plant, Freight, Haulage, Distribution, 3rd Party logistics (3PL)

The COMPANY
Our client are a progressive, forward looking marine operation who are currently experiencing a period of growth. This is indicative of the UK Marine Sector as a whole which is now valued at circa £7 Billion and is showing consistent positive growth – making it an excellent sector to move into career wise.
Our client has an excellent record of keeping good staff – with many people having worked there for over a decade – rare in these times!
They are a big believer in training and development. There will be an opportunity to study port industry recognised qualifications and you will be on a full 6 month development plan as you get to grips with life in the sector

The Role
The most important part of this role is being a strong man manager. Primarily you will be a visible hands on leader not someone who is stuck behind a desk. You should have experience of initiating and managing through cultural change in a positive way. Working hard on staff engagement – not afraid to introduce new ways of working if a legitimate business need is identified.
You should be someone who can work with multiple stakeholders in order to achieve the business aims and goals
You will work with clients very closely to plan the timely and efficient arrival, docking and unloading of vessels that may carry any number of varied cargoes – ranging from bulk cargoes such as grain, biomass or coal through to containerised cargo
Staffing and labour planning skills are pivotal due to the urgency of unloading a vessel as quickly as possible once it is in harbour.
You will ensure a team of labour is ready for action as soon as the ship is in harbour – this will include skilled plant operators with
The plant is generally cranes, diggers, dozers, bobcats, FLT, reach stackers and container handlers – but these bits of kit are on a massive scale – for example the FLT is 50t as opposed to 10t
You will also look after health and safety, perform visual inspections and work with the Marine Control team to ensure compliance with the local harbour by-laws

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Day to day leadership and man management
Budget Setting & Management
PC Skills to use labour planning software
Client Liaison and customer facing skills
Issuing Permits to work for onsite contractors
Working to targets and KPI’s where required
Invoicing and building on-going costs with clients as projects play out
