Accounts Payable Team Controller – Cleckheaton

About the Role

Smiths News are looking for an Accounts Payable Team Controller to join our friendly, diverse team at the Company’s Finance Shared Services Centre near Bradford.

With a strong reputation for controlled financial processing, this is an expanding area of the business where every individual is seen to contribute to its success.

The Team

The role sits within the Accounts Payable department and reports directly to the AP Manager.

The Publisher Accounts team are responsible for processing trade invoices and credit notes. The team works in a high volume environment, processing invoices and dealing with queries which arise from this process.

The Role

Responsible for the Publisher Accounts team, comprising of 2 smaller teams of around 4-5 clerks with a supervisor for each
Effectively supporting the supervisors to motivate and develop the teams, identifying and managing talent and poor performance
Overseeing the timely processing of invoices and resolution of queries to ensure supplier deadlines are met
Taking an active role in the resolution of escalated queries and disputes, whilst managing external and internal relationships
Collating, reviewing and analysing invoice claims and discrepancy reports
Promoting best practice and continual improvement across the team, taking a proactive part in implementing business change

About You

You may already be an experienced Accounts Payable Supervisor or an Accounts Payable Specialist and looking for your next step into People Management. This is a high volume, fast paced environment so we need leaders who have the ability to motivate and engage with their team to deliver consistent results and develop their skills to meet the challenges of the future.

This role will involve project work, and also includes reviewing existing processes and suggesting improvements where possible. We have a busy change agenda so being able to adapt and play an active part in managing change is a key skill required for this position.

We have an excellent reputation across the business and work closely with our distribution centres to resolve invoice and supplier discrepancies. You will need to have a pragmatic and flexible approach in order to maintain these key relationships, whilst managing risk and reaching amicable agreements.

Key skills and knowledge

Previous experience of managing a purchase ledger function at a supervisory level, or to be able to demonstrate the ability to lead, coach and motivate
A good knowledge & understanding of Accounting principles is essential. AAT Qualified or a Part Qualified professional accounting qualification e.g. CIMA/ACCA is desirable
A solid working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel
Ability to work collaboratively with other departments
Great communication skills – written and verbal
Proven customer service skills
Ability to handle and resolve complex and escalated issues
Flare for interpreting and analysing high volume and high value financial data
Demonstrate resilience in challenging circumstances
