About the Role – SEN Teacher– Secondary SEN School, West London, Hammersmith and Fulham
Great importance is placed on the teaching of English and Literacy, as the ability to communicate is the key to lifelong learning and independent living.
The SEN teacher will work closely with the Speech and Language Therapists to promote access to language throughout the curriculum, and the school is working towards the development of a ‘Total Communication Environment’. The English curriculum is designed to be dynamic and relevant so that each pupil can enjoy and achieve significant success, reaching aspirational targets through highly structured small steps.
4-5 hours of English lessons a week provide exciting opportunities to imagine, create and discover through ICT, literature, film and media studies. Pupils are encouraged to follow their own interests and direct their own learning wherever possible.
Literacy sessions which include phonics, reading for pleasure, spelling and handwriting take place 3x a week. Accuracy in writing is modelled within English lessons. Teaching is differentiated through the use of writing with symbols, computer programmes and animations, a large variety of books and other stimuli. Theatre trips, workshops and visits to places of interest create opportunities for lively discussion and writing. Pupils are entered for Entry Level, Functional Skills and IGCSE, Examinations based on their academic ability and expectations.
