My client is a large regional main contractor. They operate principally in Kent, Surrey, Sussex and London. Their core business includes new build and premium quality refurbishments on major projects up to £100m. Their sector coverage is extensive; in this instance they require a Design Manager who has good residential experience with masonry and timber frame as well as experience with Extra Care in the residential sector.

The role will provide exposure to a variety of major schemes including immediate work on a number of conceptual projects and two that are about to begin on site. You will be required to provide a weekly visit to these, one in Northian, East Sussex and the other in Herne Bay. Both of these projects are nearing a start so much of the heavy design work has been completed.

Role: Design Manager
• Control the flow of design information and monitor technical queries from all parties
• Essential to have a residential sector bias with ideally extra care design experience.
• Develop and write scope of works documents for subcontractor tender packages
• Evaluate and technically review submitted tenders
• Produce, manage and update the construction programme
• Attend all client project reviews, liaise with client and monitor changes
• Provide detailed technical support to the project including client and internal contract review reports
• Attend progress meetings/delivering presentations and advice
• Review information for buildability and compliance with the brief/contract
• Ensuring planning functions are delivered on time and liaise with the local authority

Skills and experience: Design Manager
• Relevant contracting experience on residential and extra care schemes
• Experience working for a main contractor
• Experience working on full life cycle of project
• Relevant academic and/or professional qualifications, ideally structural, civil or architectural background
• Must live locally in Kent

This is a challenging permanent role in a busy preconstruction team; you should be cool and capable of maintaining tight control of the design process. This is a great opportunity for an experienced Design Manager seeking a career opportunity with a major player.
