Our Warhead Engineering team have a fantastic opportunity for an individual to lead one of our Nuclear Safety teams here at AWE.

Role: Team Leader – Nuclear Safety Engineer (Office Based)

Location: Reading

Salary: £58,500.00 – £92,480.00 p/a (dependent on experience)

The Role?

Team Leader (Manager) for one of three Nuclear Warhead Safety teams in the Surety Group which is part of the Warhead Engineering Function.

The successful candidate will lead a team of Warhead Safety Engineers responsible for all product design Safety aspects against applicable statutory and safety requirements.

The focus for this Team Leader role will be to identify and deliver integrated research and development projects, alongside delivery of academic training and development of Nuclear Warhead Safety Engineers up to the MSc level though a contract with Cranfield University.

You will be required to:

  • Lead, coach and develop a multidisciplinary team and influence others at specialism or functional level to create and deliver our operational plans
  • Assess staff performance, measured against agreed personal objectives and accountabilities, and take corrective action to improve performance where necessary via appropriate management interventions
  • Engage with Subject Matter Experts within the team and beyond to provide expert knowledge and technical expertise in the field of technical specialism
  • Maintain and promote high personal standards in environment, safety, health, security and quality and be a great team player
  • Responsible for the technical quality of the work undertaken by the team and/or teams through appropriate internal (i.e. with Subject Matter Experts) and external reviews

To be successful in this role you should have the following:

  • Experience of successfully leading and managing a high performing, motivated and inclusive team
  • Proven record of accomplishment of driving delivery, performance and continuous improvement
  • Ability to work collaboratively and positively with a range of stakeholders
  • Ability to demonstrate decisiveness in decisions and judgements
  • Ability to deal with / manage sensitive staff issues
  • Strategic and tactical planning skills
  • Willing and able to undertake UK and overseas travel
  • Willing and able to obtain and maintain the security clearance required for the role

Key Skills and experience we are looking for:

  • Honours Degree (or equivalent) in science, engineering or closely related discipline or equivalent level of experience
  • Experience of high consequence safety assessments or are looking to develop within a nuclear safety focussed role
  • Experience in high hazard environments or related industries
  • A practitioner able to demonstrate good engineering and scientific judgement and with broad experience in using fundamental engineering and scientific skill.

There is training and education support available to enable candidates without experience of the Nuclear or Safety domains to succeed at this role and are encouraged to apply.
