Software Developer / Software Engineer

This is an exciting career opportunity for a open thinking Software Developer/Software Engineer with client side and server side experience to work in a small, highly professional team of software developers to work on a client side/server side based project. You would contribute to building a software engineering capability from the ground up. The company has an existing web based employee benefits product and is looking to build a software development team from scratch to radically enhance and redevelop product. The product provides a service to employers and their employees that helps manage and communicate employee benefits such as pensions, medical insurance and childcare vouchers. A key short term aim is to bring a pensions auto-enrolment enhancement to market and a longer term aim is to conceive and develop an international offering.

Job responsibilities

Primary responsibilities
• As a Senior Software Engineer, you will be charged with writing both server- and client-side JavaScript that will contribute to the benefits platform
• You will be a key member of a Scrum development team to help produce incrementally released deliverables
• Software system design, documentation and implementation
• Quality assurance using agile processes, including TDD/automated testing

Additional responsibilities

• New client implementation support
• Identification of market trends and opportunities
• Internal communication and documentation of new product features and timescales

Person specification

We’re looking for a highly self-motivated individual who eats, breathes and sleeps software engineering. They are the sort of person who wants to innovate, to try new techniques, to use the latest tools in order to produce rapidly developed, web-based applications.

Engineering skills

Key
• Expert knowledge of object orientated JavaScript, AJAX and JSON
• University education with a good degree in Engineering, Computer Science or similar subject
• Philosophically attuned to the Linux/Open Source world
• Familiarity with web technology and languages e.g. HTML, XML, CSS, etc.
Desirable
• A minimum of 8 years experience in software engineering
• Experience with an object-oriented server-side language, such as C#, Java, C++ or PHP.
• Node.js
• Appreciation of databases, SQL, relational and “noSQL” technology
• Familiar with agile development methodologies
• jQuery, YUI.
