Working in a prison isn’t for everyone. But if you’re one of the few with the right blend of qualities, it’s a secure and very rewarding career.

Working as a Prison Officer gives you the chance of not only a great career path, you’ll also have the knowledge that you are making a difference to people’s lives, helping to protect the public by working together to reduce reoffending and prevent people becoming victims of crime. No two days are the same at Highpoint, which is one of HMPS’ largest prisons. Set in rural Suffolk in striking range of the historic towns of Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket, it is a prison where we are friendly and supportive, you will have all the benefits of working at a large establishment including use of the gym and free staff car parking as well as a varied and interesting role as part of our team delivering custodial services.

Do you have what it takes?

Firstly, you’ll need great communication skills. You’ll have to deal with all kinds of situations and your ability to listen well and make yourself clearly understood will be vital. Self-confidence, personal integrity and emotional intelligence are also a must, along with plenty of discipline and physical stamina too. Together, these qualities will allow you to support prisoners with their rehabilitation, while also maintaining a safe environment. And at end of the day your resilience will mean you can leave work at work and bounce back from challenging events quickly.

If you have everything it takes, you can expect a lot in return. As well as a comprehensive training programme, you’ll have the chance to gain professional qualifications and make real progress in your career. You’ll also receive valuable public sector benefits, including 25 days’ annual leave and a civil service pension scheme.
