Java Developer

We are currently looking for Java developers to work for Capita on a permanent basis. This role will be based in London. You will be working on the Orbit system.

Orbit is the core system for delivering employee benefits services to our clients. Our team is increasing in size, to provide extra functionality, and to scale our application.

We work in an Agile environment which includes pair programming and test driven development.

Our systems development is driven by the team’s ambitions and ideas, and you have the opportunity to drive Orbit’s technology into the future.

We are more interested in how you approach and solve problems rather than your ability as a human compiler.

We work with Java 6, Spring 3.1, Spring MVC, Hibernate, iBatis, HTML and JavaScript, our database environment is Oracle 11g and some knowledge of using Oracle PL/SQL would be beneficial.

There will also be opportunities to work with other technologies including Alfresco, Apache Camel, Atlassian Confluence and many more.

A typical day could see you working on bug fixes, small improvements or larger scale developments depending on the current needs of the team. Working alone or with others we expect you to produce high-quality, fully tested, standards compliant code, while working directly with the business to define requirements and deliver the optimal solution.

We expect you to keep up-to-date with technological advances so that the system continues to be cutting-edge. We also expect you to continually develop your skills to ensure you stay at the forefront of technology.

Core duties

Produce system design and specifications and relevant documentation
Develop against agreed design patterns
Produce technical documentation
Develop new system functionality
Provide application support and bug fixing as required
Implement Unit Tests where possible
Maintain and improve existing code and systems to improve efficiency
Perform application profiling and performance tasks when relevant
Maintain high coding standards and not violate the agreed software architecture rules
Work alongside testers in System and User testing
Identify and escalates key issues (both technical or business) to the Development Manager
Develop an understanding of client needs, treating them fairly at all timesEssential Experience/Skills:

Experience of AGILE environments with the ability to communicate effectively
Degree in Computer Science or equivalent
Spring
MVC
Java
iBatis / Hibernate or other ORM framework
SQL
HTML / CSS / Javascript (even at a basic level)
Injection frameworksDesired Experience/Skills:

Apache Camel / Spring Integration
PL/SQL (Oracle)
