Building Resident Safety Manager

Here in Newham, we take building safetyvery seriously. Because people are at the heart of everything we do, the safety of the places they live, work, and socialise are of the utmost importance. As we come through the pandemic, Newham Council is putting together a brand-new team to address building safety and housing across our borough and instil innovative ideas across our approach.

Housing means homes, and we want people to feel safe in theirs. Everything we do is focused on achieving this, and we are recruiting for motivated, empathetic people willing to take up this challenge in one of the country’s most diverse, vibrant, and growing boroughs.

Put people at the heart of things

Taking a lead role here in our new team, you’ll soon discover that your ability to empathise with residents and to really listen to their needs, is as important as your technical knowledge and housing experience. You’ll oversee all our engagement and communication activity with residents – making sure they are fully informed about building and fire safety, and that we have an excellent understanding of what it most important to them. This is very much going to be a two-way conversation – and an ongoing one.

Be a driving force for change

The work we need to do is far-reaching and varied. We have more than 80 high-rise blocks and a large number of low-rise buildings in the Borough. So the portfolio offers unique challenges and opportunities – informed by the results of our External Wall Systems survey. Within this setting, you’ll provide specialist operational management, support compliance and deliver improvement. You’ll prepare safety cases, oversee structural and fire safety, and implement findings of the Building Safety Bill. In short, you’ll help us to become a driving force in the housing industry.

Use your skills to protect lives

Bringing with you experience of working on construction projects and excellent negotiation skills, you’ll share our commitment to creating safe homes and working with the people who live in them. You’ll be confident researching, developing and implementing policy and strategy, and have an expert knowledge of building pathology, construction methods and materials – as well as the relevant regulations. CIOB or RICS, and IFE membership will be essential.
