Salary: £45,441 to £48,474 per annum
Contract Type: Permanent
Working Pattern: Full-time (37 hours per week)
Location: County Hall, West Street, Chichester, PO19 1RQ (Hybrid and Flexible Working – countywide travel)
Interview date: week commencing 22 January 2024
This role offers hybrid working arrangements and will require you to work from county council office buildings and make regular site visits, as well as the flexibility of home working as appropriate. Final arrangements to be confirmed with successful candidate.
All West Sussex County Council (WSCC) employees have a WSCC location as their contractual work location, however we do operate a ‘Smarter working’ approach, this is something that you agree locally with your manager, for what works best for you, your role and your team. More details will be shared once you start working.
You will need to be able to travel independently around the county, including to areas that may not be easily accessible by public transport. Pool cars and pool bikes available.

The Opportunity
As an Area Building Surveyor, you will be responsible for providing a Building Support and Advice service under the terms of the Service Level Agreement offered to schools. You will be required to manage your own portfolio of schools and deliver Building Condition Review and Development Plans.
You will also be responsible for organising and delivering capital and revenue schemes, as required utilising a variety of traditional design, specification, and intelligent client project management commissioning methods.
Working collaboratively with the Building Surveying Team Manager, you will lead and co-ordinates multi-disciplinary approaches to the asset management of the built estate for both freehold and leased buildings. This includes: incorporating engineering-supplied technical information into Building Review and Development Plans, Planned Maintenance, and Minor Improvement specifications.
You will be responsible for supporting long-term planning of the service ensuring continuous improvement and business continuity. You will have the opportunity to mentor and provide on-the-job training to other team members to meet objectives and deliver a professional service.

Organisation skills are important to balance competing demands, including cost, risk, and time pressures, and deliver best practice outcomes that comply with statutory requirements.
You will also feel comfortable making prompt decisions when managing caseloads and setting priorities.
Previous formal training or professional qualification, such as a surveying degree, is necessary for this role. You will be able to demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, communicating on several different levels with multiple stakeholders and adapting your style accordingly.
You will have keen attention to detail, be comfortable working independently and be at ease in this fast-paced, agile environment with rapidly changing deadlines, workloads, and priorities.
