They are looking for a personable, educated individual who has a passion for supporting others either in an educational setting or as a qualified mental health professional.

The ideal candidate will be suitable for one or both of the following roles, serving as part of the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA).

Key Objectives:

Study Skills Tutor:

Facilitating students’ working strategies to improve in grades
Help students save time while studyingSpecialist Mentor:

Assisting students to overcome any emotional barriers to learning
To enable students to enhance their learning autonomyJob Description:

Study Skills Tutor:

In your 1-1 work with students you will explore and deliver working strategies that help with acquiring, recalling and retaining information in written and spoken form as well as provide techniques to help with memory, organisation, and attention issues that SpLD students may experience while studying.

Working strategies should, where possible, be introduced and developed while focusing on students’ existing work. Your ultimate aim is to make yourself unneeded, and for students to become independently fluent using tailored working strategies. These working strategies should be useful to their customers as they move into their working lives.

During weekly 1-1 sessions you will:

Work with individuals to develop bespoke skills accessing, recognising and understanding course material, and reinforcement of learning as appropriate;
Utilise relevant learning techniques to ensure information is retained by customers (please re/cover the How People Learn guidance doc/ workshop with your Lead Tutor, to look at effective teaching and learning practices);
Be flexible and adaptable to students’ needs. Where possible avoid generic formulaic teaching. Instead focus on, and work from, students’ unique current reality (e.g. the work they have to complete, how they are assessed on their course, etc.). Working 1-1 is a luxury and allows them to tailor sessions to the individual
Encourage metacognition
Encourage independence
Signpost the student towards other sources of guidance and support where appropriate
Maintain high standards of professionalism and customer care at all timesSpecialist Mentor:

Specialist Mentors provide specifically tailored 1-1 support which helps students address the barriers to learning created by a particular impairment, e.g. a mental-health condition, or autistic spectrum disorders (ASD).

This could include a range of issues, for example, coping with anxiety and stressful situations, emotional barriers, how to deal with concentration difficulties, time management, prioritising workload and creating a suitable work-life balance.

Your role is to help students recognise the barriers to learning and support them in developing strategies to address these barriers, particularly at times of transition, e.g. when starting university or when planning to move on from higher education, and how to cope at times of stress. For some students this support will need to be ongoing while for others it might be gradually phased out or only be required at certain points of their course.

During weekly 1:1 sessions you will:

Plan and deliver an agreed level of specialist and individual support
Develop new targets in response to progress and changing needs
Be an excellent role model for students
Regularly evaluate and report on progress
Be aware of safeguarding issues and when to share information
