Principal Engineer – Mechanical – Rail

A major contractor are currently recruiting for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to work with them in their rail division.

3.2. About the role
The Principal Engineer will operate as part of the Engineering and Technologies business unit of Rail and will be based in Liverpool, although may be required to travel to sites around the UK and overseas. Our Liverpool office focusses on the delivery of electrification engineering projects. For the right person, this role could be located in our Derby office.
Principal Engineers are responsible for the technical delivery of engineering and are experts in their chosen discipline, in this case Railway Overhead Line Electrification. A Principal Engineer may be involved in the delivery of engineering on live projects, engaged in work winning or technical development.
In this role, the Principal Engineer will report to a Senior Engineering Manager or Engineering Manager. The Principal Engineer may be appointed as the “Contractors Responsible Engineer” (CRE) or the Project Manager of a design project as the need arises.
3.3. Requirements of the Role
Principal Engineers are technically accountable for a team of typically 15 engineers and draughtspersons, delivering design and consultancy engineering, aiming to achieve the following:

Technical delivery of projects on time and to the agreed specification
Deploying skilled and competent resources in Electrification
Preparing and reviewing designs in including the approval of packages

Supporting the work winning process
Introducing new engineering techniques
Developing innovative project solutions, and project delivery processes
Developing personal and team capability
Customers
Developing effective relationships with clients
Ensuring that customer technical requirements are met or exceeded
Being an agent for repeat business
Safety
Ensure compliance with industry and company standards
Ensuring risks are eliminated at source in project delivery
Promoting and leading design for safety initiatives
Quality
Ensuring designs are of the highest quality
Identifying and promoting best practice
Actively sponsoring and encouraging improvement projects
Cost
Continuously seek to identify and implement cost saving initiatives and design development initiatives
To improve technical processes and create increased design certainty
