As a member of the York team, you’ll support a portfolio of local projects and nationally significant projects as well as offering expertise to international projects across the transportation and energy sectors, including railways, highways, metros, marine, wind, hydro, and more.

You’ll be joined by hundreds of skilled experts, collaborating over the entire lifecycle of a project – from idea, concept and design, to operation and maintenance within our portfolio of tunnels & underground structures, line side civil structures, bridges, complex structures, ground engineering and reclamation projects.

DESIGN THE FUTURE WITH A GLOBAL TEAM OF EXPERTS

We are looking for a Senior Engineer with a background in either Civil or Structural Engineering to join our team in York. This role will give you the opportunity to co-create with our experts on some of the most prestigious infrastructure programmes in the UK. Working alongside your colleagues you’ll be responsible for undertaking analysis and calculations of design work and activities on-site for a variety of civil engineering projects. Within Rail, we have worked closely with our client to develop and deliver their Tunnel Management Strategy. You will also work closely with design and construct contractors to deliver tunnel inspection, repairs, strengthening and re-construction projects network wide.

On a day-to-day basis, you’ll also be responsible for:

• Coordinating a project, discipline or significant technical element of a project
• Production of engineering design and details in accordance with project requirements including repair and strengthening work to existing masonry tunnels and associate structures.
• Organising, management and undertaking of site surveys and appraisals of various structures, masonry tunnels and foundations as appropriate.
• Liaison with clients, attending meetings on site, progress meetings, design review meetings.
• Preparation of calculations, written reports including feasibility and options reports and checking of contract drawings
• Providing technical support and guidance to the team
• Checking of design calculations and drawings produced by other engineers
• Supporting production of proposals and cost estimates for projects/packages of work
• Project management, including cost/commercial aspects of projects.

Furthermore, you’ll:

• Have a Master’s degree in either Civil or Structural engineering
• Hold professional recognition with either the ICE, IStructE, or an equivalent institution
• Post-graduate experience in a design environment, coordinating the technical input for heavy civil or complex structures ideally within a rail environment
• Be familiar with UK design standards or Eurocodes
• Have the inter-personal skills and aptitude to work collaboratively in a diverse multi-disciplinary team
• Have good communication skills, both verbal and written
• Be a technically skilled engineer, able to demonstrate a deep understanding and enthusiasm for structural engineering
• Experience mentoring and developing less experienced staff
• Understanding of CDM Regulations, specifically the designer’s requirements
• Understanding of requirements regarding the design risk assessment process
