Design Manager – Main Contracting

Brief Outline:

A family owned business, founded over 90 years ago require a Design manager due to continued expansion and growth

About the Client:

Long established family owned business with strong traditional values and an innovative and forward thinking approach to construction. Our client has a Sound financial footing with a turnover in excess of £200m; they are currently working on projects ranging from £500k – £20m. They work across a number of sectors including Education, Industrial and Commercial projects

About the Role:

* Produce design management deliverables during bid stage for the bid manager
* Manage the bid process when required and deliver the tender to the agreed timescales
* Manage and set targets for ensuring delivery of design to the agreed timescales
* Ensure that the design is coordinated, buildable, high quality, cost effective and complies with the company’s contractual obligations and procedures
* Manage the bid and design process to meet the agreed programme
* Assess customer documentation and requirements
* Contribute to development of tender strategy and continuously monitor design and build projects
* Consider opportunity and scope for value engineering where appropriate
* Ensure high standards of health and safety, quality and client satisfactory
* Inspect and audit design and build systems and procedures and ensure any subsequent actions required are carried out
* Maintain awareness of current company health and safety requirements and changes
* Implement environmental procedures with respect to design
* Ensure effective communication to all parties
* Identify alternative materials and products
* Seek opportunities to learn about changes and innovations in the industry
* Influence and support teams to innovate and achieve optimum solutions
* Offer solutions to site related difficulties
* Promote and present a professional company image to the customer in all dealings, to become the main point of contact on design and build jobs through the bid period until start on site
* Ensure that the customers feedback and comments are acknowledged, prioritised and actioned
* Work closely with whole of design team and suppliers offering the contractors’ design portion (CDP)
* Continually review suppliers’ performance and share information
* Influence and support suppliers to innovate and achieve optimum solutions
* Deputise for bid manager when not available, during tender period
* Involvement with pre-construction including tender finalisation, tender strategy and adjudication process
* Identify new business opportunities/leads
* Facilitate and lead design management meetings and workshops

About the Candidate:

* Experienced carrying out a design management role on projects ranging in value to £50m
* Experience of managing construction bid projects within the sectors the company operates, in particularly within the education sector
* Experience of working as part of a team on site
* Experienced in the interpretation of data and information and to produce it in a clear and logical format, for example in the production of tender questions
* The technical knowledge required to be able to review, check, comment on drawings for change, build-ability and quality, health and safety, and compliance with contract and legislation
* Excellent organisational, planning and time management skills; able to manage multiple projects simultaneously without compromising on standards and quality
* Ability to deliver major projects and possess the organisational skills required to do so to demanding deadlines
* Ability to develop friendly and professional customer focused relations with others
* Good management skills, with the ability to motivate employees to achieve
* Excellent communications skills, with the ability to simplify complex concepts both orally and in written form
* Excellent negotiation and diplomacy skills and the ability to convince senior colleagues of the need to develop solutions to the benefit of the business
* Ability to clearly demonstrate high competence in areas of challenging, influencing and coaching
