We have two opportunities for Materials or Metallurgical Engineers to join us inBarrow-in-Furnessto work on these exciting programmes of work.
There are two positions within the Materials Engineering team, one for a Metallic Materials role, and one for Non-Metallic Materials.
As a Senior Materials Engineer, whether Metallic or Non-Metallic, you’ll be working across both the Astute and Successor programmes, offering support to in-build queries for the Astute, and assisting with the Successor systems design definition; ensuring material considerations are incorporated into the design.
As a Senior Engineer Materials your main responsibilities will involve:
Carrying out material assessment for use on varying areas of the submarine, reviewing amongst other aspects:
Toxicity and Fire considerations
Materials for Reactor – analysis of trace elements (reviewing testing by other areas)
Hazard and Risk AssessmentProviding advice to the MoD and Industry Partners
Providing expertise to the wider business on all aspects of either metallic or non-metallic materials.
Actively pursue new developments in materials for potential use on submarines.
Using a range of equipment and techniques to investigate emergent material problems arising during submarine build and commissioning.
Actively support for material and or welding development programs.
Liaising internally, and with suppliers to ensure material controls are properly enforced.
As a Senior Engineer Materials your skills and qualifications will ideally include:
Ideally you would have a degree or equivalent in Materials Science/Materials Engineering or in Chemistry.
Demonstrable practical knowledge of a wide range of metallic or non-metallic materials.
Awareness of design requirements and potential corrosion / environmental degradation mechanisms for metallic or non-metallic materials.
The ability to conduct material investigations for example to evaluate non-compliant material on a fitness for purpose basis.
These roles are being advertised as Senior Engineers, with the experience above required to fill the positions at this level. We would also be happy to review applications from graduates in relevant disciplines, with materials engineering awareness, however, this would likely be at a reduced salary and grade.
What we’re looking for in you:
To succeed in this role you’ll need to be comfortable working independently, with the confidence to follow your own initiative where appropriate.
You must also be able to assimilate and process data, often technical, from a wide range of sources.
