As Chief Engineer at SEA, you’ll be accountable for the technical quality of the engineering output of our Transport division, from complex systems integration to software development or turnkey system installations.

You’re the authority on technical transport solutions, playing a critical role in ensuring that all technical solutions are correct, remain effective and suitable through their lifecycle, and meet all design criteria and compliance constraints. You’ll also ensure that projects and programmes of work are adequately resourced, that processes, procedures, and ways of working are valid, and that engineering facilities continue to meet the needs of the engineering teams.

Beyond the strictly technical, you’ll contribute to commercial operational and organisational strategy, supporting the development and direction of new and existing products and services to meet the needs of SEAs future transport customers.

What you will be doing…

The Chief Engineer role is a blend of ‘assurance’ and a ‘governance’. You’ll be engaged in ensuring the most appropriate engineering activities are undertaken to achieve the optimal technical solutions, while providing independent review of technical solutions of specific bids, product development and customer delivery projects and support activities. Specific responsibilities include:

– Work with the Project Delivery, Service Delivery, Sales, and Product Management Teams to coordinate shared resources across the various demands on the Division, ensuring bid, project, product, and support solutions are technically optimal and in the best interest of the wider Transport Division at all times.
– Provide resource and competency management, and technical leadership for large group of multi-disciplinary engineers, delivering multiple concurrent development and delivery and support programmes up to several million pounds.
– Support the Business Development teams by providing technical expertise and ‘solutioneering’ prior to and during formal bid activities.
– Be responsible for the formation and review of clear, compelling, robust and compliant technical proposals. Where required, engage the engineering community to support bid activity.
– Be accountable for the correctness and appropriateness of the engineering activities on product and customer delivery projects through effective governance and assurance
– Act as the technical lead on complex projects/programmes to ensure the successful delivery (a compliant, high quality, on-time and profitable technical solution).
– Ensure that all functional and non-functional requirements are appropriately elicited/identified and validated, and that they are satisfied through implementation and verification.
– Provide leadership and direction on appropriate engineering methodologies including architecture, design, implementation, test, deployment, in-service support, fault-finding and resolution.
– Travel may be required to other SEA sites as well as customer and supplier premises both in the UK and abroad.

The right person…

To be a success as SEAs Chief Engineer, you’ll need to bring a wealth of experience at a senior technical level within at least one engineering discipline. Transport experience is not necessary, but ideally you’ll come from a software, electronics and/or systems background, bringing significant experience of technical governance on complex engineering programmes. Specifically, you’ll bring:

– A degree in Engineering (or equivalent), Chartered Engineer status (or working towards it), a member of a relevant professional institution (i.e. IET, IMechE, BCS etc.), substantial experience of working in industry
– The ability to build strong relationships with a variety of stakeholders (customers, regulators, internal teams etc.) and a diplomatic and professional approach to dealing with a range of different people
– Experience in the successful technical leadership, line management, and resource management of multi-disciplined teams and delivery of complex engineering projects/programmes
– Deep understanding of good engineering practice and discipline, throughout the V-model, with experience of a variety of appropriate project lifecycles and associated methods and tools, such as waterfall and agile.
– Awareness of and adherence to common project management techniques.
– Open minded and able to listen to and critically review other points of view, able to reconsider and change own position in response to changing information, whilst maintaining the ability to form a definitive, authoritative, and potentially controversial position and convince others of its validity and ultimately drive through to implementation
– Experience with bids, research and product development as well as customer project delivery and in-service technical support
