Salary: £72,888 – £96,000 per year

We are undergoing a major transformation programme, which includes a major investment in digitisation. This means customers can do more for themselves online, in real time, on computers, tablets and smartphones therefore we are building a team of outstanding people who will create and run these new and improved technology services.

This role sits within HMRC’s Enterprise Architecture team. The team is responsible for setting the Integration Strategy, defining platform capabilities, drawing roadmaps and reference architectures as well as helping to govern against these directions.

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced Architect to work within the Integration and Interoperability team. The Enterprise Architect’s responsibilities include improving the current IT infrastructure, optimizing business operations, and setting the direction and approach for integrating information applications and programs. The Enterprise Architect is also responsible for cataloguing, developing, coordinating, communicating, maintaining, and enforcing overall enterprise architecture models, representations, initiatives, capabilities, and components to adequately perform the organisation’s business and technology activities.

This position assists in creating and evolving integration roadmaps that will drive the adoption of modern technology, whilst pushing HMRC’s hugely complex IT estate towards a smaller set of strategic platforms and business system

Job description
We are looking for someone who can work across the organisation at a strategic level to contribute into formulating and drawing technology strategy that goes in tandem with Business Strategy, agile and responsive to IT change.

The right candidate will be able to demonstrate their ability to:

Evaluating internal functions, business development strategies, and IT processes and suggesting improvements.

Creating business architecture models to reflect the organisation’s strategies and goals and creating and implementing business visions and goals.

Evaluating systems engineering, talent recruiting, and accounting models for discrepancies and vulnerabilities.

Suggesting ideas to reduce costs in IT and business leadership.

Organising training to improve employees’ knowledge and skills for future organizational growth.

Conducting research in talent management to improve the organisation’s business operations.

Providing business architecture and systems processing guidance.

Ensuring the efficiency, security, and support of the organization’s goals.

Creating methods for compliance architecture, such as data storage, metadata management, and change control.

Determining and implementing build versus buy strategies, mentor personnel, and views of the overall business strategy.

You will be defining our integration strategy and roadmaps, aligning them with business strategies and requirements and obtaining senior partner consensus. You will support and contribute to solution designs both as a specialist and from a strategic point of view.

As part of the Enterprise Architecture team you will engage at a strategic level, influencing policy, and setting direction for technical and business change. You will play a key role in ensuring that HMRC develops and maintains a strong IT Architecture capability.

Responsibilities
Essential Criteria

A broad IT and Enterprise Architecture background, with experience of using and defining integration patterns

Development and ownership of EA strategies and roadmaps from a business and technology perspective, including ‘as-is’, ‘to-be’ and transitional states

The ability to develop, document and establish architectural principles, policies, standards and reference architectures

Experience in assuring technology decisions are aligned to EA strategy

Knowledge of the wider digital economy and the ability to carry out horizon scanning across industry, identifying advances in technology, emerging trends and their potential impact on the organisation

The ability to simplify complex and technical information by using appropriate and accessible language for non-technical audiences

Capable of guiding the decision-making process, explaining trade-offs and making a recommendation based on all the available information

The ability to look beyond the immediate problem and identify the wider implications across the enterprise

An overall perspective on business issues, events and activities, and an understanding of their wider implications and long-term impact

An understanding of how all parts of the business model work together including processes, operating models, and application architecture

Desirable Criteria

Understand and contribute to discussions about commercial contracts, procurement and sourcing strategies

A development background to understand the complexities when integrating multiple applications in distributed cloud computing environment

Either have one or more (or willing to achieve) professional IT qualifications such as CITP, TOGAF, ArchiMate, Enterprise and Solution Architecture (BCS), Certified Solutions Architect (AWS or Azure)
