Job description

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an individual that has the drive and ability to progress their
career to the next level within one of the leading manufacturers of theatre and cinema upholstered
furniture companies in the UK. Based in East London, the company founded in 1945 has achieved
substantial growth in the last two years and forecast to continue.
40 hours per week Monday-Friday Days 8-4:30 pm. Required to work overtime and some Saturday’s
during peak and busy periods.
Responsibilities:
Polish / stain, shape, finish, and refinish damaged, worn, or used wooden parts for used and new
chairs to specified colour or finish
Tasks Polisher:
– Confer with Team Leader and / or Sales person to determine colour requirement and/or
finishes
– Follow drawings or given instruction to produce specific designs
– Disassemble items to prepare them for finishing, using hand tools
– Remove fabric and foam prior to finishing, or mask areas that should not be exposed to
finishing processes or substances
– Remove old finishes and damaged or deteriorated parts, using hand tools, stripping tools,
sandpaper, steel wool, abrasives, solvents, and / or dip baths
– Examine furniture to determine the extent of damage or deterioration, and to decide on the
best method for repair or restoration
– Fill and smooth cracks or depressions, remove marks and imperfections, and repair broken
parts, using plastic or wood putty, glue, nails, and/or screws
– Treat warped or stained surfaces to restore original contours and colour
– Smooth, shape, and touch-up surfaces to prepare them for finishing, using sandpaper,
pumice stones, steel wool, chisels, sanders, or grinders
– Wash surfaces to prepare wood for finish application
– Select appropriate finishing ingredients such as paint, stain, lacquer, shellac, or varnish,
depending on factors such as wood hardness and surface type
– Mix finish ingredients to obtain desired colours or shades
– Brush, spray, or hand-rub finishing ingredients, such as paint, oil, stain, or wax, onto and into
wood grain; then apply lacquer or other sealers
– Smooth, shape, and touch-up surfaces to prepare them for finishing, using sandpaper,
pumice stones, steel wool, chisels, sanders, or grinders
– Paint metal surfaces electrostatically, or by using a spray gun or other painting equipment
– Distress surfaces with woodworking tools or abrasives before staining to create the required
appearance, or rub surfaces to bring out highlights and shadings
– Replace or refurbish upholstery of items, using tacks, adhesives, softeners, solvent, stains or
polish
– Brush bleaching agents on wood surfaces to restore natural colour
– Spread graining ink over metal portions of furniture in order to simulate wood-grain finish
