Prison Officer
Full job description
HM Prison Service
Salary: £3,000 per week
Prison Officer
Location: Wolverhampton, West Midlands
Job Type: Permanent
As a Prison Officer, the little things you do matter. Helping someone to read a letter from home, remembering an important visit, providing encouragement to learn a new skill – over time, it all helps to build constructive relationships. And these relationships can provide strong foundations for rehabilitation. Obviously, it’s a challenging task and there’ll definitely be days when you feel more like a guard than a guardian of change.
But if you’re disciplined and resilient as well as empathetic and good with people, it could be the rewarding career you’re looking for.
And it doesn’t matter what background you come from. Whether you’re currently an office worker, truck driver or graduate, there’s a great future ahead of you if you have the right qualities. We need confident, resilient people with excellent communication and listening skills. Your high standards of personal integrity will win the respect and trust of both prisoners and colleagues, as will your use of common sense to handle difficult situations. And your positive attitude will mean you can keep your sense of humour even under pressure – working through the tough moments to help create the breakthrough moments for prisoners.
You may be pleasantly surprised by the benefits on offer. Not only do we provide a comprehensive eight-week training programme, there will also be opportunities for further professional development and the chance to gain NVQ qualifications. Career progression will be limited only by your ability and ambitions and there are valuable public sector benefits. Starting salary is from £3,000 for 37 to 41 hours per week, plus an additional £2,500 premium, with 25 days’ annual leave and a civil service pension scheme.
Make this moment count.
